Guides to short stays in Cairo

There is no single best area to stay in Cairo; there is a best area for your trip, and three questions decide it. How often will you go to the airport? Are the pyramids and the Grand Egyptian Museum the point of the visit? And are you visiting people who live in the new cities? Downtown and Zamalek win for a first sightseeing visit, which is what every hotel list says. New Cairo, Madinaty, El Rehab, Sheikh Zayed, Nasr City and Sheraton win for family visits, work in the Fifth Settlement, a flight, or a stay of a week or more, and they are where the furnished apartments are.
I host in these areas, and the question guests actually ask on WhatsApp is never which hotel, it is which area. This guide is that answer, with the minutes.
Seven answers for seven trips. A first visit for the pyramids and the museums: Downtown or Zamalek, the centre, and a day trip to Giza. A night or two around a flight: Sheraton, five minutes from the terminals, where the apartments near Cairo airport accept single nights. A longer stay on the east side near City Stars: Nasr City, twenty minutes from the airport. Work in the Fifth Settlement or a visit to family there: New Cairo, 25 to 35 minutes from the airport, with serviced apartments in New Cairo compounds. A family visit with children and a car: Madinaty or El Rehab, 35 to 45 and 30 to 40 minutes from the airport, with everything inside the gates. The pyramids and the Grand Egyptian Museum as the centre of the trip, from an apartment rather than a hotel: Sheikh Zayed, 20 to 30 minutes from the museum on the west side. And a quiet compound between New Cairo and Maadi: Kattameya, 25 to 35 minutes from the airport.
The minutes are the ones each area page on Mazar Stays publishes, by car outside rush hour. Cairo traffic can double any of them, which is why the last section of this guide is about traffic and not about hotels.
Every travel guide to where to stay in Cairo lands on the same set: Downtown around Tahrir Square for the Egyptian Museum and Khan El-Khalili, Zamalek for its restaurants and streets you can walk, Garden City for a Nile view, Maadi for a greener, quieter base, and Giza for waking up in front of the pyramids. The Culture Trip and Discover Discomfort both say it, and for a first three-day visit built around the monuments they are right.
Mazar Stays has no homes in those areas, and this guide is not going to pretend otherwise. If your whole trip is the monuments and you have three nights, stay in the centre. Where to stay in Cairo changes the moment the trip has another reason: a person, a job, a flight, or more than a week.
New Cairo is the planned city east of the Ring Road, established in 2000, and the Fifth Settlement is the part most people mean: the American University in Cairo's campus, Cairo Festival City at its entrance, Point 90 and the 90th Street offices. It is 25 to 35 minutes from Cairo International Airport. Serviced apartments in New Cairo sit inside gated compounds with parking at the gate, which is why it is where companies put visiting staff and where families from the Gulf stay when they are visiting relatives who live there.
One guide warns that staying in New Cairo and visiting the pyramids daily could mean four hours a day in a car, and suggests using it only as a bookend on arrival and departure nights. That is a fair warning and the honest answer is to agree with it: New Cairo is the wrong base for a pyramids-every-day trip. Serviced apartments in New Cairo are the right base for work in the Fifth Settlement, for a family visit, for the Grand Egyptian Museum once in the trip, and for a stay long enough that a kitchen matters more than a lobby. Kattameya, on the Ring Road between New Cairo and Maadi, answers the same questions a little closer to the river.
Madinaty and El Rehab are the two Talaat Moustafa Group cities on the Suez Road east of the Fifth Settlement, each walled, each with its own gates, markets, clinics and parks inside, and Madinaty with its own bus network between its numbered groups. Madinaty is 35 to 45 minutes from the airport and El Rehab 30 to 40. The apartments here are the 2 and 3-bedroom family kind, with a parking space and a washing machine, and children can be outside the front door without being on a main road.
Choose them when the trip is about the people inside those gates: a wedding, a newborn, a month with grandparents, a summer with cousins. Choose somewhere else when every day starts with a drive into the city, because the Suez Road is the far end of it.
Sheikh Zayed is in Giza governorate on Cairo's west side, about 28 km from Tahrir Square and next to 6th of October City. From a compound there the Grand Egyptian Museum is 20 to 30 minutes away, and the museum, fully opened on 1 November 2025, sits about 2 km from the pyramid complex, so a west-side apartment covers both without crossing the city. Arkan and Mall of Arabia are the landmarks guests navigate by. The cost is the airport: 60 to 75 minutes, so Sheikh Zayed is not the area for a stay built around a flight.
Cairo International Airport is in Heliopolis, north-east of the centre, about 15 km from the business district. Two areas sit beside it. Sheraton Al Matar is the district next to the terminals, five minutes by car, and the apartments near Cairo airport there accept single nights: a late landing, an early departure, a layover long enough to sleep. Nasr City is twenty minutes in, between Heliopolis and the Ring Road, with City Stars and the shops of Abbas El Akkad, and it is the better base when the stay is a week on the east side rather than a night around a flight.
If you are only asking where the apartments near Cairo airport are because you have one night, the answer is Sheraton and the question is finished. If the flight is one day of ten, the airport should not choose your area at all.
Every answer above is a travel time, and that is deliberate: in Cairo, where to stay is a question about where your days are. The new cities are joined to each other and to the airport by the Ring Road and the Suez Road, and inside the east side those minutes hold outside rush hour. Crossing the city, east to west, is what turns thirty minutes into ninety, and it is what the four-hours-a-day warning is really about. Put the apartment on the side of the city your days are on, whether that means serviced apartments in New Cairo for a week of meetings or apartments near Cairo airport for one night, and most of the traffic problem goes away before you arrive.
For one or two nights in the centre, a hotel is the simple answer. For anything longer, furnished apartments in Cairo are what the new cities are made of: a kitchen, a washing machine, a parking space and your own front door, booked by the night inside a gated compound. A serviced or hotel apartment is the same thing with cleaning between stays and a named host who runs it. The apartments on Mazar Stays are the same homes listed on Airbnb, booked direct from the host in Egyptian pounds with no service fee, and each listing shows the area, the minutes and the host before you ask.
So the order is: pick the area from the list at the top, then pick the home. Furnished apartments in Cairo are not scarce; the right one in the right area for your week is, and it is usually booked a few weeks ahead for the summer and for Eid.

Pick the area that matches your trip and its page lists what is available and what a stay there involves.
For a first sightseeing visit, Downtown around Tahrir Square or Zamalek, as the travel guides say. If the trip is about people, work or a flight rather than the monuments, the new cities: New Cairo, Madinaty, El Rehab, Sheikh Zayed, Nasr City or Sheraton.
Madinaty, El Rehab or a New Cairo compound: gated, with parking inside and 2 and 3-bedroom furnished apartments in Cairo's new cities, where markets, clinics and parks are inside the walls. Families visiting from the Gulf ask this question most, and the answer is almost always one of those three.
Yes for work in the Fifth Settlement, a family visit, or an arrival and departure base 25 to 35 minutes from the airport, with serviced apartments in New Cairo compounds. No for daily trips to the pyramids; the guides are right about that traffic.
Giza for a hotel with a view. Sheikh Zayed for an apartment on the west side, 20 to 30 minutes from the museum, which opened in full on 1 November 2025 about 2 km from the pyramids.
Sheraton Al Matar: apartments near Cairo airport five minutes from the terminals that accept single nights. Nasr City, twenty minutes in, suits a longer stay on the east side.
In practice one city. Giza is the west bank, the pyramids and Sheikh Zayed; Cairo is the east bank, the airport and the new cities. Choose by where your days are, not by the name.
A furnished apartment in a compound in New Cairo, Madinaty or Sheikh Zayed, booked by the night with the longer stay agreed with the host. A kitchen and a washing machine matter more over a month than a lobby does.
